The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a USA federal law that introduced certain national standards that must be complied with to safeguard patients’ sensitive health information and maintain online security and privacy. Healthcare providers, health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and business associates are subject to this privacy rule.
It provides constant health insurance coverage for workers who lose or change their job and combats fraud and abuse while maintaining the standard of accessibility to long-term healthcare services.
PHI- Protected Health Information regulated and protected under HIPAA is essentially any information created, transmitted, received, or maintained by UMMS, including demographic information, related to the provision of healthcare services to an individual. It includes data that any of the covered entities possess via electronic, verbal, or written mediums and the past, present, or future physical or mental health or condition of an individual and payment details for the provision of health care to an individual.
