The U.S. government as an addition to the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, has introduced ‘Meaningful Use’ (MU) program to get more healthcare providers to implement EHR(Electronic Health Records) systems with an objective to “meaningfully use” it. All healthcare providers and hospitals who adhere to these objectives put forward by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) will be qualified for incentive payments. The providers must prove their implementation of “meaningful use” of the EHR system. This framework allows EHR system integration into most practices resulting in a more efficient and secure way of maintaining patient health records and this incentivized implementation of EHR also facilitates the transition to a technological platform and enables providers to adapt to it.
